The Exceptional Presenter

I took notes while reading The Exceptional Presenter: A Proven Formula to Open Up! and Own the Room  by Timothy J. Koegel.
Standing Posture
  • Hands down by side

Seated Posture
  • Hands on table at all times

Practice
  • Make presentation about 2 minutes less than the time given
  • NFL players practice 6 days a week for about 6 minutes of playing time. Estimates suggest during the football season quarterbacks will work 50 to 60 hours a week or more. Why wouldn't you practice?
Q&A
  • Pause after someone asks a question, both tough and easy  questions
  • People to watch: Tony Blair
  • Repeat or rephrase the question

Reduce Nervousness
  • “It’s not about you. It’s about the message.” (p. 151)
  • Memorize (Not exactly word for word.) the first 2 minutes of the presentation
  • Rehearse/practice in 3 minute segments
  • Arrive early
  • Mingle
  • Visualize success
  • Breathe deeply
  • Take a walk before presenting (“Studies show that exercise can help to relax your system for two hours or more following the exercise.” (p.156)
Books Timothy J. Koegel mentions that I’d like to read
  • How to Catch a Road Runner by Neil Rock
  • Telling Lies by Paul Ekman
  • 95 Ways to Use Humor for More Effective Teaching and Training by Doni Tamblyn
