Alisa chose to put her genres in a valise that she selected and painted.
She chose a valise because in Pam Munoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising, the main character, Esperanza, travels from Mexico to the United States with her mother. They leave their comfortable life in Mexico after Esperanza’s father dies and his brother tries to force her mother into marrying him.
Alisa put the following in the valise: Job Posting (Esperanza and her mother picked crops in California); A poem written in two voices:rich Esperanza and poor Esperanza; and a letter to the friend Esperanza left behind.
