Soup Day

The protagonist goes to the grocery store with her mom so they can shop for vegetables for soup. Once home, mom chops the vegetables into shapes (some of which are recognizable so a parent or teacher can point out a circle or cube) and teaches her daughter to cut mushrooms and zucchini, with a plastic knife of course. While the soup cooks, mom and daughter read and play. By the time dad gets home, the family is ready to enjoy a nice warm meal on a cold, snowy December day.

The illustrations are rendered with acrylics, collage, Adobe photoshop, and Adobe illustrator. This is the first book Iwai has both written and illustrated.

Parents could use the book to talk about working together, following directions, and cleaning up.
