Social Action

I think I saw the beginnings of social action in the classroom the other night. I didn’t have anything to do with it.

The students had ideas,
were making plans,
were deciding enough is enough
long before they told me about it.

I guess it started when one person shared what she learned about
the conditions of a rural school during her I-search process.

The students said
they’d clean it up,
they’d try to find support and funding,
they’d help students
obtain a safe place to learn.

I listened.
I watched.
I thought
these future English teachers can do it.
They can change things.
