Writing Tip from Carolyn Roy-Bornstein

I keep a journal. I have done this since Ms. Artis required all of her eighth grade students to do so. Sometimes I circle things in my journal that I want to find when I’m working on a piece.
But I like Roy-Bornstein’s idea better:
“Color-code your notes to keep them organized….Yellow for essay ideas. Orange for short  story ideas. Customize your color key for your own needs.”  (Carolyn Roy-Bornstein qtd. in The Writer, Nov. 2011)
I tend to circle based on topics. I’ll circle funny things Z said or teaching ideas I might want to write about later.
How can you make Roy-Bornstein’s tip work for you or your students?
How do you keep your journal organized?
