This graphic novel is set in the 1990s and is based on the true story of Robert "Yummy" Sandifer, an eleven-year old gang member from Chicago shot a young girl named Shavon Dean. Yummy’s father was in jail and he was abused by his mother, so the fictional narrator, Roger, wonders if Yummy’s crimes were a result of his environment, including the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago's South Side.
The author, G. Neri, used public records and media accounts from the ‘90s to capture the reaction of the community and the country. Black-and-white shadowy art accompany the uncertainty of how Yummy became who he was.
The book is heart-wrenching.
